Due to a mixture of insufficient funds and bureaucracy the lighthouses of Barbados are not all well maintained, and none of them are open to the public or have gift shops or restaurants. Hopefully this will change in the near future as they have so much commercial potential.
Ragged Point/East Point Lighthouse in St. Philip was built in 1875 of stone. It is 29.5 m (97 ft.) high. Thankfully a local company is in the process of refurbishing the lighthouse and the lighthouse keeper's house and The view is spectacular and this is a great spot for photos.
South Point Lighthouse in Christ Church was built in 1852 of cast iron. It is 27 m (89 ft.) high. It was exhibited at London’s Great Exhibition in 1851, and then shipped to Barbados and reassembled.
Needhams Point Lighthouse in St. Michael, in front of the Hilton hotel, was built in 1886 and is an octagonal masonry tower. It is the smallest of the four and is a mere 13 m (43 ft.) high. It is the best maintained of the four lighthouses.
Harrison Point Lighthouse in St. Lucy was built in 1925 and it is a concrete block tower. It is 26 m (85 ft.) high. Unfortunately the lighthouse keeper's quarters and other buildings are abandoned.
